ISTH Fundamental Research Workshop Grants encourage global knowledge-sharing

A cornerstone of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) is its commitment to strengthening fundamental, basic and mechanistic translational research in thrombosis and hemostasis.

As part of this effort, the ISTH proudly offers Fundamental Research Workshop Grants to facilitate small, international meetings focusing on specific topics within  thrombosis and hemostasis. Up to three annual grants of $50,000 USD or less are awarded each year.

Applications are reviewed based on the following:

  • Quality of the applicant’s track record of research
  • Previous engagement with the ISTH
  • Feasibility of the budget and scarcity of available external funding
  • Quality of scientific program and speaker panel
  • Engagement with early career investigators

The application period is now open! Apply for a Fundamental Research Workshop Grant from now until September 1 for your opportunity to bring a cutting-edge workshop to your local region.

Case Study: “Fibrinolysis Down Under” Workshop in Australia

A prime example of the program’s impact was the “Fibrinolysis Down Under” workshop that took place from November 11–14, 2024 in Australia.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Byron Bay, recipients of the ISTH Fundamental Research Workshop Grant organized a workshop to explore the fundamental and translational aspects of fibrinolysis. Bringing together a panel of global leaders and emerging scientists, the workshop marked the first fibrinolysis-focused conference in Australia in nearly two decades.

Led by Robert Medcalf, Tetsu Urano, Yuko Suzuki and Cherry Keragala, the workshop highlighted the expanding role of the fibrinolytic system in health and disease beyond its traditional association with bleeding and clotting.

It addressed important new aspects of fibrinolysis, including new methods of detection and how recent findings have laid the groundwork to modulate the process for new indications.

The program featured 13 international speakers and 12 local speakers, as well as 23 abstract submissions. With 82 attendees, including clinicians, researchers and Ph.D. students, the event exceeded expectations and fostered important interdisciplinary exchange.

As the case study shows, the ISTH Fundamental Research Workshop Grants not only help to advance science, but they also build the bridges that connect researchers across borders to solve the most urgent challenges in thrombosis and hemostasis.

Apply now through September 1 for an ISTH Fundamental Research Workshop Grant.
