Platelets promote thrombo-inflammation and glomerular endothelial dysfunction in diabetic kidneys

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is associated with endothelial dysfunction, platelet activation and impaired glomerular filtration. In this presentation, Anubhuti Gupta investigates the role of platelets and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in renal thrombo-inflammation. Studies in patients and mouse models showed that platelet activation and NET formation correlated with renal dysfunction. In vitro, platelets exacerbated endothelial barrier disruption under high glucose conditions. Targeting platelets or platelet-neutrophil interactions in diabetic mice improved kidney function and reduced thrombo-inflammation. These findings suggest new therapeutic strategies aimed at platelets, platelet-neutrophil conjugates or NETs in DKD.
