ISTH Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC): What it is and how you can get involved
What is the SSC?
The ISTH Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) is an integral part of the ISTH, serving as the Society’s scientific working arm. It handles standards creation, nomenclature, registries and general education. As a permanent committee of the Society, it has independent authority over its scientific program and reports to the ISTH Council.
The SSC is comprised of 21 subcommittees in addition to one working group, one standing committee and the executive committee. Each subcommittee addresses a specific problem related to thrombosis, disorders of hemostasis and their underlying vascular biology.
SSC leadership and composition
Joost Meijers, Ph.D., currently serves as Chair of the SSC and Kathleen Freson, Ph.D., serves as Vice Chair. Recently, Jerrold H. Levy, M.D., was appointed as the new SSC Vice Chair. His two-year term will begin immediately following ISTH 2024.
Levy will serve as SSC Vice Chair from 2024-2026 alongside incoming SSC Chair Kathleen Freson. He will then become the SSC Chair for the 2026-2028 term. Learn more about SSC leadership and officers here.
Each subcommittee is led by a Chair and up to eight Co-Chairs who have significant expertise in the subcommittee's area of interest. Two Co-Chair positions are reserved for an Early Career ISTH member and a Reach-the-World Member, to foster a diverse and inclusive community within the subcommittees.
The Chair and Co-Chairs are responsible for overseeing the subcommittee's projects on standardization, nomenclature and guidance. In addition to the subcommittees’ leadership, many other experts actively contribute to the projects and work of each subcommittee.
Apply to serve as an SSC Subcommittee Co-Chair
Each year, following the annual meeting, some SSC leaders will rotate off each subcommittee, giving new experts an opportunity to serve on a subcommittee.
The SSC is now accepting Subcommittee Co-Chair applications. Please apply by July 31, 2024. The SSC is most productive and collaborative with the active involvement of its diverse membership. The SSC welcomes interested experts from underrepresented communities to apply.
